The Need

1 in 6 children aged 3–17 years have a medically diagnosed disability,

presenting overwhelming challenges for both the child and their family. Daily life becomes a struggle, and dreams for the future may seem out of reach.
Together, we can provide life-changing gifts, build supportive communities, and empower these families through vital resources.

The Need

Families with children who have disabilities face immense challenges that affect every aspect of their lives. Navigating daily tasks, accessing medical care, and managing educational needs require extraordinary effort and resources. Despite their resilience, these families often find themselves overwhelmed and under-supported.

In many communities, there are significant gaps in services and resources for children with disabilities. Schools may lack specialized programs, and access to medical equipment and therapy can be prohibitively expensive. Families often struggle to balance work, caregiving, and managing the additional financial burdens associated with their child’s needs.

Statistics reveal the magnitude of these challenges:

Divorce Rate

Parents of children with disabilities face a divorce rate of nearly 80%, significantly higher than the national average. The stress and strain of managing a child’s needs can put immense pressure on relationships.

Siblings

Approximately 30% of siblings of children with disabilities experience social and emotional challenges. They often feel neglected or overwhelmed by the demands placed on their family.

Family Unit

Families with a disabled child are more likely to experience financial strain, with 40% reporting that they struggle to cover basic expenses due to the high costs of medical care and specialized resources.

Children with Disabilities

1 in 6 children aged 3–17 years has a medically diagnosed disability. For example, the prevalence of autism in children has increased significantly, with rates rising from 1 in 2,500 children in the 1980s to 1 in 36 children in 2020. Children with disabilities often face social isolation and have limited access to the support they need to thrive.

Without adequate support, these challenges can hinder a child’s development and place immense pressure on the entire family. Families often feel isolated, struggling to connect with others who understand their experiences.

At Specially Gifted Foundation, we understand that a medical diagnosis affects the entire family—not just the child. Our approach is holistic: we treat each family as a whole, from the parents to the child to the siblings. This is why we allow each family to choose their gifting based on what their family needs. Whether it’s medical equipment, therapy sessions, or special experiences, our tailored gifts are designed to support the unique needs of each famil.

Moreover, we offer resources and build supportive communities for the whole family unit. By organizing community-building events and providing educational materials, we empower families with the knowledge and connections they need to navigate their journey together.

When families receive the support they need, they can focus on what truly matters—helping their children thrive. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential and every family feels supported and valued.

Together, we create a stronger, more inclusive community where no one feels alone.
